In Bengaluru, BBMP officials have reported that the sewage flow into the Koramangala stormwater drain has reduced significantly from 120 million litres per day to around 8 MLD after the implementation of the K-100 Urban Waterway Project. However, local residents and businesses near the drain argue that the foul odor and sewage-mixed water continue to persist. The K-100 project, with a government allocation of Rs 175 crore for drain infrastructure redevelopment, covers a 9.2-km stretch from KR Market to Bellandur Lake and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
To prevent sewage from entering the Koramangala Rajakaluve, BBMP officials have established a 5 MLD capacity sewage treatment plant at Kumbaragundi and implemented measures like concrete rings and plantings for natural water purification. BWSSB is also constructing a sewage treatment plant near Shantinagar, set to be operational by the year's end, further aiding in halting sewage inflow.
The progress includes the construction of retaining walls, ground-level bridges, decorative lighting, landscaping, granite fixtures, pedestrian walkways, and grills. BBMP has also built service roads alongside the rajakaluve and installed pipelines to prevent rainwater runoff from entering the drain.
The project was initiated by BBMP in 2021 with the goal of improving the drainage system's efficiency and sustainability. It was expected to be finished by 2023 but missed various deadlines afterward.
